ITCom Student Phone Statements To Go Online

Posted August 1, 2001

ITCom, in conjunction with the my.umich.edu Project Team in Gordon Leacock's Planning and Strategic Projects area, is introducing a new, paperless billing process for its customers in Family Housing and University Residence Halls in late August.

These customers will no longer receive paper billing statements through regular postal mail. Instead, their total monthly telephone service charge will appear as a line item on their student statement of account and in Wolverine Access. Details about their monthly phone calls—their monthly telephone service statements—will be available to them through the my.umich Web portal (http://my.umich.edu).

Any questions, comments, concerns, or inquiries about ITCom's new billing process for Family Housing and University Residence Halls can be directed to ITCom Customer Service at 763-2000.

Protect Yourself Against the W32/SirCam@MM Virus

Posted August 1, 2001

A PC virus discovered on July 17 and named W32/SirCam@MM has spread rapidly in the last few days. VirusScan, the antivirus software for PCs provided to members of the U-M community, has been updated to provide full detection and protection. (The SirCam virus cannot infect Macintosh computers, but Mac users may see messages from it in their mailboxes.) Use antivirus software on your computer and keep it up-to-date to protect your computer from infection. Also, do not open unsolicited attachments.

The W32/SirCam@MM virus is spread as an e-mail attachment. It typically is attached to a message with the text:

    Hi! How are you?
I send you this file in order to have your advice
    See you later. Thanks

For details about the virus, see the "W32/SirCam@MM Virus Gets Lucky" page on the Virus Busters Web site.

Four New Area Codes for Michigan

Posted July 17, 2001

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) has approved three geographic area code splits, as well as a new overlay area to accommodate the growth of telephone numbers. Area Codes to be split are central Michigan's 517 area code, eastern Michigan's 810 area code and southwestern Michigan's 616 area code. The Commission also approved the addition of a new overlay area code, 947, to the 248 geographic area.

Local calling areas and the cost of Ameritech calls will NOT change as a result of the new area codes. Calls that were local before the area code split remain local after the area code split.

For more information, please see the Area Codes page.
