Telephone number changes and new dialing patterns in University Housing

Posted September 1, 2004

New Telephone Numbers and New Dialing Pattern
Telephone numbers for students living in University Housing Residence Halls and Northwood Single Student Housing have changed. The phone numbers in these locations are now in the 565 exchange. Telephone numbers in the Lawyer's Club and Northwood Family Housing have not been changed.
New Dialing Pattern for 565 exchange
The 565 exchange is a campus exchange, however, it requires a different dialing pattern than other campus exchanges. This is because there is a 615 exchange on campus.
Calling from a 565 exchange telephone
  • You do not need to dial "9" when placing a call to a non-campus number from a 565 exchange telephone.
  • You must dial all seven-digits when placing a call to all local and campus numbers from a 565 telephone, except:
    • University operator: dial "0"
    • Outside operator: dial "00"
    • Emergency: dial 911
Calling to a 565 exchange number from a campus phone
To reach a University Housing 565 exchange telephone number from a non-565 exchange campus telephone (including campus courtesy phones and red box phones with dial pads outside each hall's main entrance) you must dial "9" and seven digits. There is no local charge for dialing a 565 number from a campus telephone.
Student Voice Mail
Students in University Housing Residence Halls and Northwood Single Student Housing will be provided U-M Message Center telephone voice mail service. (To access Message Center, students will dial 936-5000.) Those students in private rooms, including resident staff, may request voice mail with advanced features, such as web access, fax service, and long distance call return. Requests for advanced features will be handled by ITCom Customer Service at 763-2000.
Why was this change made?
The decision to give students 565 numbers was made because the University has a limited number of traditional campus numbers (i.e., those numbers that can be 5-digit dialed). The University Housing student population is a specific and transitional group. New students are only familiar with 7-digit dialing and should not notice any inconvenience. Less than half of the students who lived in University Housing last year will return this year. Returning students are being given new dialing instructions.

Last year each student living in a University Housing residence hall was assigned a personal number, in addition there was a room telephone number assigned to each telephone in student rooms. The room telephone number was needed to meet the needs of non-student residents, such as summer campers and conference attendees. Both personal and room phone numbers rang on a single telephone. When these students were asked to comment on the personal and room telephone number services, they reported that they did not perceive their personal telephone number to be an advantage. This year, we are returning to the previous service model and only room telephone numbers are being provided.

We appreciate your understanding of this change. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact your unit's ITCom Project Manager.

The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers (UMHHC) is moving their telephone service to SBC

Posted September 1, 2004

IT Communications (ITCom) staff have been working with staff from UMHCC and SBC to facilitate this change. The cutover of telephone service in UMHHC locations has started and is projected to continue through at least January 2005. All parties working on this project are working very hard to make certain there is no disruption in telephone service during this transition. However, it is possible that telephone service to campus locations will be affected when an SBC cutover takes place.

Please be assured that a smooth transition with no disruption in telephone service is our goal. Should any corrective action be needed, ITCom will respond as quickly as possible.

Rate Increase for Comcast High Speed Internet Service

Posted August 10, 2004

Comcast has notified ITCom that they plan to upgrade their billing system. As a result of this change the U-M contract will be changing and there will be a rate increase for Comcast High Speed Internet service billed to a University of Michigan department account. At this time we do not know the exact rate or date this change will be effective. We expect the monthly recurring charge to be approximately $60.00 and have been told the change will be completed prior to December 31, 2004.
