On-Campus Backbone Connections

Distribution Layer Switch

Campus buildings and data centers are connected to the UMnet Backbone through Distribution Layer switches. Most locations have a primary switch and a redundant switch.

The switches are Cisco Catalyst models and the supported protocol is Internet Protocol (IP). Standard circuits are 1 Gigabit Ethernet (1GE); 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) circuits can be purchased.

The Distribution Layer switches in the initial 2002 design were funded by ITS Comm equity and their upgrades were to be funded by the local unit. Since the Distribution Layer switch has become integral to the provision of reliable backbone network service, the U-M Network Working Group recommended in 2007 that their replacement be done in a planned, systematic manner and that the associated costs be built into the UMnet Backbone access fee. This recommendation was approved and the replacement plan and associated funding model change began in FY09. The plan and funding model are described in Distribution Layer Switch Upgrade.
