UMnet

UMnet Administration supports network administrators on campus, coordinates the networking infrastructure and network numbers, and manages and maintains key infrastructures and services, including:

Backbone Technologies and Router Services

UMnet Admin uses Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) as internal gateway protocol (IGP) and Boarder Gateway Protocol (BGP) as external gateway protocol (EGP). Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and IPv6 technologies are currently being explored.

Campus DHCP/DNS Services simplify computing site administration by setting up setup of domain name servers and domain name delegation. Any unit that needs to assign and track IP addresses for their computers, printers, IP phones, or other devices that connect to the Internet can use the DHCP/DNS service.

The Network Information Database (NetInfo) is available to search and review the current configuration of any network on the Ann Arbor campus, excluding the medical campus. For other network tools, see the Repair and Network Operations Center (NOC).

  • UM received a new IP address allocation (35.1.0.0/16) August 2012

  • UM received a new IP address allocation (35.2.0.0/16) November 2013

  • The 35.0.0.0/16 block is used for guest wired/wireless networks. Users of these addresses should not be considered UM faculty/staff/students!
This block has been subdivided as follows:
    • 35.0.0.0/18 - MGuest Wireless
    • 35.0.64.0/18 - UMnet guest and Eduroam wireless users
    • 35.0.128.0/18 - CoE guest users

  • The University Libraries currently do NOT allow direct access to licensed on-line resources for any wireless users.
Wireless users may use any of the following methods to obtain access to Library on-line resources:
    • Follow links on library Websites, such as Mirlyn, the AAEL Library page, SearchTools, or Library Research Guides.
These links will always route you through the library's proxy server and provide access to the resources after authentication with your uniqname & password.
    • Use the library's Proxy bookmarklet.
After installing the bookmarklet in your Web browser, you can click on the bookmarklet in your toolbar to reload the page you are on through the proxy server.
Details on installing the bookmarklet can be found online.
    • Bookmark only library-provided stable URLs for your commonly used resources.
A listing of frequently-accessed sites with their URLs are listed at the end of this message; for others, please look them up in the databases section of SearchTools.
    • Use the U-M Virtual Private Network (VPN), which will make it appear as if you are coming from an IP address within the U-M "wired" IP range.
Instructions on installing and running the U-M VPN are available from ITS.
    • If you have any questions about access to library resources, please contact Ask a Librarian.
