Coaxial Cable

Coaxial cable, which is used by UMTV and some data communications (such as Ethernet and 3270 terminals), is a round cross-section, two-conductor cable consisting of a single center solid wire (or stranded conductor) symmetrically surrounded by a braided or foil (or one or more of each) conductor that is usually grounded. Both conductors share the same axis, so they are coaxial.

Coaxial cables have a characteristic impedance (expressed in ohms), that is determined by the relative diameters of the two conductors and the material used for the insulator between the two conductors (called a dielectric). Cable products can be used for communications that require highly reliable signal transmission.
