Caller ID

Caller ID is a telephone feature that makes it possible for call recipients to see who is calling before they answer the phone.

If you live in a University Residence Hall, Northwood Apartment, or the Lawyers Club, then Caller ID is already available to you at no additional charge.

What do I need to make Caller ID work?

The Caller ID feature requires use of a Caller ID display phone or a Caller ID display box. Caller ID phones and display boxes are available at many department, electronics, and telephone stores.
  • Residence Halls:
    • Once you have a Caller ID phone or device, it must be connected to the modular jack outlet (for voice) just below your current wall telephone. (See diagram for more information)
    • To complete installation, follow the owner's manual instructions.
  • Northwood Apartments and Lawyers Club:
    • If you have a telephone with Caller ID, simply connect it to the telephone jack outlet.
    • If you have a Caller ID box, connect it to the telephone jack outlet first; then connect your telephone to the box.
    • To complete installation, follow the owner's manual instructions.
Once Caller ID is properly installed and connected, this device will start displaying caller information before you answer the call.

What display information will I see?

The information displayed will depend on the information that is made available.

    Calls from on-campus
    From other U-M residential phones: the caller's room phone number is displayed. From U-M departments or administrative units: the caller's phone number, and sometimes the caller's name, is displayed.

    Calls from off-campus
    Any of the following may be displayed: name only, number only, name and number, "unknown", "out of area", "cellular", "private", or no information depending upon the caller's phone service.

    Log of Caller Information
    Caller ID devices generally log incoming calls by date, time and/or other caller information that may be available through the caller's phone service.

    Call Waiting Information
    If you are talking on your phone and you have Call Waiting, a tone will notify you of incoming calls. Your caller ID screen may display who is calling. This call-waiting display feature requires a phone or external display box that supports "Caller ID-TypeII," which may be listed by the manufacturer as CallerID/Call Waiting or Enhanced CallerID.

What display information will others with Caller ID see about me?

    Calls to on-campus locations
    When you call an on-campus number that has a Caller ID device connected to it, only your room phone number will appear on the recipient's display screen.

    Calls to off-campus locations
    When you call an off-campus number that has a Caller ID device connected to it, either a U-M default number (647-0000 or 665-6555) or the name "University of Michigan" will be displayed.

What if I use my long-distance authcode or a calling card number?

If you purchase a Caller ID device that retains last number dialed, you should delete any history of calls made using either your authcode or a calling card number, since this information will be retained in the log. Please refer to manufacturer's manual for your device for instructions on how to delete last number dialed.

Each student assigned an authcode is responsible for maintaining the security and privacy of his/her individual authcode.
