Retirement of U-M Dial-in Service

Once ubiquitous as the way in which most computer users connected to the Internet, dial-in service has become a thing of the past at U-M.

Merit permanently turned off and discontinued its Merit Global Services (MSG) and Merit 800 for-fee services on Monday, July 2, at 8:00 a.m. These services provided national and international dial-in connectivity for members of the U-M community (and others in the Merit network), utilized at their peak by many hundreds of users. Merit and ITCS had previously discontinued Ann Arbor campus and local dial-in services at the start of this year.

The demise of dial-in services has been a result of significantly decreased usage and in accord with the trend of campus dial-in providers around the country. It will result in important savings to the University by eliminating a service that is being used by relatively few people.

Everyone who used either the Merit Global (MGS) or Merit 800 for-dial-in services needs to find an alternative Internet Service Provider to connect to the Internet.
