Internet2 News Archive28 September 2001: Originally scheduled for Austin, Texas, the Internet2 Fall Member Meeting will now be held virtually on Tuesday, October 2 through Friday, October 5. You can participate interactively in the Virtual Internet2 Member Meeting in a variety of ways. More information... 9 March 2001: During the I2 member meeting in Washington, D.C. it was announced that Dan Atkins, Professor of Engineering and former Dean of the School of Information at the UM, was elected to a 3 year term on the Internet2 Industry Strategy Council. Dan joins Homer Neal, Professor of Physics and former Interim President at UM who was elected to a three year term on the Applications Strategy Council last year. 8 March 2001: At their meeting on January 12th the Merit Board of Directors voted to establish MichNet as a Sponsored Educational Group Participant in Abilene. This application was accepted/approved by Internet2 on 8 March 2001. It allows a much wider range of educational organizations in Michigan including public and private colleges and universities, community colleges, K-12 schools, libraries, museums, hospitals, and clinics to obtain access to Internet2/Abilene without the need to be individually sponsored. Other organizations that are not involved in education including for-profit firms may still obtain access to Internet2/Abilene if they are working in collaboration with and sponsored by a Primary Abilene Participant such as UM. And click here for more information on Internet2/Abilene Sponsored Participation. 17 December 2000: The network link to the MichNet backbone node in Dearborn was upgraded to 45M bps and now provides Internet2/Abilene access to UM Dearborn. 5 June 2000: Homer Neal, director of the UM-ATLAS Collaboratory Project and professor of physics at the University of Michigan, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Applications Strategy Council (ASC), an advisory committee "that will guide higher education's advanced networking efforts, including the Internet2 project." Aikman, Director, Product Development & Deployment in U-M's Information Technology Division announced that that Renee Frost, who was the Director of Administrative Information Systems in ITD, has agreed to serve as the University's representative to the Internet2 Early Adopter middleware program. In addition to serving as the University's representative to the Early Adopter program, Renee will become the overall Project Director of the UCAID Early Adopter project in mid-February. In this position she will report to Ken Klingenstein, Director of the Middleware Initiatives, UCAID. 13 December 1999: U-M has been accepted as one of a dozen participants in the Internet2/NSF Early Harvest/Early Adopters program. Early Adopters is an effort to develop and deploy "middleware". Middleware is the identification, authentication and authorization software that is needed to provide differenciated Quality of Service in the Internet2 environment.
