U-M Automated Operator Service Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions

Customer (dial 615-2244 anytime or dial 0 after hours)
U-M Automated Operator "Thank you for calling University of Michigan. Please speak one of the following options:
  • To reach a faculty or staff member, say 'faculty'.
  • To reach a Department, say 'Department'.
  • To reach a student, say 'Student'."
Customer "staff"
(speak your choice of staff, student, faculty or department)
U-M Automated Operator "Please say the full name of the person you want to reach."
Customer "John/Jane Doe"
(say the name of the person you want to call)
U-M Automated Operator "Are you looking for "John/Jane Doe?"
Customer "Yes"
U-M Automated Operator "The requested listing is: 555-5555.Please hold while I connect your call."

Tips

  • Make sure you speak clearly and directly into the telephone, the U-M automated operator service can become confused by background noise from radios, cellular telephones or speakerphones.
  • You can say or speak your choice at anytime without waiting to be prompted.
  • If you choose the department directory during business hours your call will be routed to a U-M telephone operator, during non-business hours your call will be routed to a night service message.
