In order to use the U-M VPN, you must be running Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) or higher and have a network card installed on your Mac. If you are going to use the UM Wireless VPN profile, you must also have a wireless network card installed. Manufacturer-installed Airport cards will work. See the Cisco Release Notes for VPN Client for more information. Make sure your machine meets the minimum system requirements.
Cisco VPN Client
If you do not have the Cisco VPN client installed on your computer:
Download the Mac OS X VPN client from this page, using download link below. You will be asked to authenticate, use your uniqname and umich password.
Extract the program to your desktop. Click on the CiscoVPN installer icon to install the client.
Reboot your computer.
Start the client. You should see the UM-off-campus-access and the UM-on-campus-wireless profiles in the Connection Entries. If you do not, remove the U-M VPN client from your computer and reinstall it.
Once you have the client and profiles on your computer, make sure you have a network connection, select the the appropriate profile either, UM-off-campus-access or UM-on-campus-wireless, and click the Connect button on the top of the VPN client. You will prompted for your uniqname and umich password. Once you have done this, you will be connected to the University of Michigan network securely.
Important U-M VPN Profile Download Instructions Using Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger)
Click the link for the profile you want to download. (You may be required to log in.)
After the file loads in your browser, select File » Save As...
In the "Save as:" dialog box, delete the .txt extension (including the dot) from the file name. (Be sure to leave the rest of the file name!)
Click Save.
Select Don't Append.
The file will now be automatically saved with the .pcf extension. (NOTE: You cannot simply download and rename the .txt file! You must follow the download instructions above!)
U-M VPN Profiles
If you have the Cisco VPN client installed on your computer but do not have the U-M VPN Remote Access or UM Wireless VPN profile you will need to download the required profile(s).
Make certain you have a network connection.
Download the needed profile(s) using the appropriate link(s) below.
Start the client.
Click the Import button at the top of the VPN window, and select either the UM-VPN-RemoteAccess.pcf or the UM-Wireless-VPN.pcf. They should be listed in the lower half of the VPN screen.
Once you have the client and profiles on your computer, make sure you have a network connection, select the the appropriate profile either, UM VPN Remote Access or UM Wireless VPN, and click the Connect button on the top of the VPN client. You will prompted for your uniqname and umich password. Once you have done this, you will be connected to the University of Michigan network securely.
