Connecting to MWireless and UM Wireless Network

MWireless

MWireless uses WPA2-Enterprise to allow network access and to provide strong security, including data encryption, and is the preferred method for WiFi connections. To configure a device to use MWireless you must be in an area on campus where that SSID or network name is being broadcast. Short videos and detailed instructions are provided below for different operating systems.

Connect to MWireless

MWireless is available in all ITS provided WiFi locations. MWireless-UMHS is available in the Medical School and NCRC.

1. Turn on your computer or network device.
2. Turn on the WiFi connection for your device.
3. Associate with the MWireless (or MWireless-UMHS) network.
4. When prompted, enter your U-M uniqname and UMICH password.

Accessing MWireless requires that you use your UMICH password. See UMICH Password Hub for additional information about this password. Users who still have UMICH and Active Directory UMROOT passwords that are different see Synchronization of UMICH Passwords to Active Directory UMROOT passwords. If you are having trouble logging in, you should change your password.

UM Wireless Network

UM Wireless Network uses web-based authentication to allow access to the network. Other than your login, no network-level encryption is provided when using UM Wireless Network. Because UM Wireless Network connections are not encrypted it is recommended that you always use MWireless to connect to the WiFi network.

Internet Explorer 9 is not supported. If you use IE9, your device will connect, but it will be redirected back to the login page and not your home page.

To connect to UM Wireless Network:

1. Turn on your computer or network device.
2. Turn on the WiFi connection for your device.
3. Associate with the UM Wireless Network SSID.
4. Open a web browser and try to access any external web page (i.e. www.google.com).
5. You will automatically be directed to the login page. Locate the login box in the upper-left corner of the page:

   

6. Enter your U-M uniqname and UMICH password, and click the Log In button. You will be automatically directed to the web page you originally requested, and have access to the network.
