Connect Using WPA2-Enterprise with Ubuntu Linux

There are many types of operating systems and devices that have WPA2-Enterprise capabilities, and may work with MWireless. Below is the information required to configure a device to connect to MWireless using WPA2-Enterprise. If you require assistance configuring your device, consult the vendor-provided help for your device (e.g. manual or website).

The following instructions are provided for Ubuntu 9.10 and above. These steps may differ from other distributions of Linux. Consult the help documentation of your distribution for instructions on setting up a WPA2-Enterprise connection. General settings for unsupported operating systems are available here.

  1. Before connecting to MWireless, you must aquire the InCommon RSA Server CA security certificate file (By default it will save as a .txt file. Please rename or save as a .crt file.) This file should be saved to a safe location where it will not be deleted (e.g. ~/ or ~/Documents/), as it will be needed for subsequent connections.

Some linux distributions need to use the top level root Certificate Authority instead of the certificate that was used to sign the servers certificate. If the InCommon certificate above does not work you may need to use the AddTrust External CA Root file.
  2. Find the Network Manager icon in the notification area. It will look like a small signal strength indicator, and will be located near the clock.

  3. Right-click the icon to ensure that Enable Networking and Enable Wireless are selected in the drop-down menu:

    Network Manager

  4. Left-click the Network Manager icon and select MWireless:

    Network Manager

  5. In the Authentication required by wireless network window, enter the following information, as shown in the image below:

    • Wireless security: WPA & WPA2 Enterprise
    • Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    • Anonymous identity: <leave blank>
    • CA certificate: <browse to the InCommonServerCA.txt file you dowloaded>
    • PEAP version: Version 0
    • Inner authentication: MSCHAPv2
    • Username: <your U-M uniqname>
    • Password: <your UMICH password>

  6. Click Connect.

You should now be connected to MWireless.
